This weeks artwork refers to the beginning of bookbinding. The historical ancestor of modern books is mostly called a codex. A word based on the Latin "caudex", which means trunk or (wood)block. The font I used for the text in the artwork is also called Caudex.
I've only bound a book once. Unfortunately I wasn't the only one who was pleased with the result (a nice binding with a selfmade, marbled cover). Some student took my book, leaving me empty handed. Every now and then I feel the urge to give it another try. Especially when I see how some artists are able to create unique books. A little research led to inspiration; not to create my own book of art, but inspiration for a new short story, "Ghostwriter", which will be available at the end of this week.
Synopsis: There are many "wannabe" writers; but not all of them make it till "The End". Luckily there are benevolent people, eager to help writing but most of all finishing your story. Ghostwriters they are called. Some of them are a bit too fanatic...

Was nog niet klaar met mijn artwork of het schrijven, maar het is bijna klaar en heb nog wel wat nieuws om te delen, zoals een nieuwe bundel en een nieuw kort verhaal die deze week verschijnen, dus lees verder...Flash en korte verhalen schrijven is een van mijn "guilty pleasures". Al deze verhalen worden gepubliceerd als op zichzelf staande e-boeken; niet iedereen vindt het echter leuk om die verhalen één voor één te downloaden. Wacht! Hulp is onderweg! Ik (her)publiceer al mijn flash en shorts in bundels die ook als paperback verkrijgbaar zijn. Deze week de eerste collectie...
Terwijl ik gewoon doorschrijf, zullen de verhalen zoals gepubliceerd in mijn Flash & Shorts ebook-serie worden gebundeld en gepubliceerd als paperbacks. Deze collecties worden gepubliceerd als "Vinyed, Flash en Short Collection". Het eerste nummer, "Quadrennium" is nu uit. Elke tien weken verschijnt er een nieuwe bundel. Elk met ongeveer 6-8 verhalen; iets meer dan 30.000 woorden, vergelijkbaar met een novelle. Let wel, mijn novelles, zoals "Vanura" worden alleen gepubliceerd als op zichzelf staande boeken (ebook en paperback).
Het kunstwerk van deze week verwijst naar de beginperiode van het boekbinden. De 'historische voorouder' van moderne boeken wordt meestal een codex genoemd. Ik heb maar één keer zelf een boek ingebonden. Helaas was ik niet de enige die blij was met het resultaat (een mooie band met een zelfgemaakte, gemarmerde omslag). Een student pakte mijn boek en liet mij met lege handen achter. Af en toe voel ik de drang om het nog een keer te proberen. Zeker als ik zie hoe sommige kunstenaars unieke boeken kunnen maken. Een beetje onderzoek leidde tot inspiratie; niet om mijn eigen kunstboek te maken, maar inspiratie voor een nieuw kort verhaal, "Ghostwriter", dat eind deze week beschikbaar zal zijn.
