While sportsmen all around the globe are disappointed (at the least...) as, despite all their efforts to be part of the 2020 Olympics, eager to 'go for gold', they ended up sitting at home. Hoping they'll be fit to enter the, postponed, 2021 games. A few people have different thoughts on these 'non political' games.
Media reproduce the official narratives that the Olympics are a sports event, a celebration of international camaraderie, and even a ‘movement’ for peace. While, according NOlympicsLA,
"the Olympics are first and foremost a multi-billion-dollar industry. The narrative of the once-in-a-lifetime chance at athletic glory generates mass audiences, clicks, and advertising dollars while the Olympics catalyze and intensify displacement, environmental destruction, militarized policing and surveillance, corruption, hijacked public agendas, nationalistic and imperialist fervor, and undemocratic transfers of weath from public to private hands."
