My eldest daughter Femke does. She has had some small texts tattooed. One of them is the text "Forever in my heart", but in Frisian ("Foar iwich yn myn hert") and handwritten.

The first part written by my wife, the second part by me. The tattoo artist placed it above her heart. Secretly, I'm a little proud of this tattoo...

Last year she got a new tattoo, which she had won at a shop in Brielle: "Angel & Demon". A beautiful shop, run by father and daughter. Coincidentally, they are also interested in fish (and reptiles and birds and dogs and, well, all kinds of animals). A super clean store, with knowledgeable people.

I thought back to years ago when we drove to Breda (a city in the southern part of The Netherlands) with the whole family because Fem needed a piercing in her forearm. (No. Not gonna mention this shop...) An inconvenient piercing that always got in the way and has long since been removed. My memory of that day is not. Fragments of that day are incorporated into the short story "Show me".

Synopsis:
Tattoo shop Stick & Poke offers customers special treatment. Because the old tattoo technique can be painful, customers are offered an anesthetic. Afterwards, customers go home relieved. They feel comfortable, but also strange. A wonderful technique that turns out to be extremely addictive…

Order your copy here.
Eduard Meinemahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09982081687049387597noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3274040078263895011.post-63674035853526878602024-02-27T12:43:00.001+01:002024-02-27T12:43:12.884+01:00Doxing

Have you read my Delft Blue Crimes series? Some are typed in the old-fashioned way, on a typewriter ("Some day I'll transfer them to Word..."). Others, often the first texts you ever wrote, in outdated word processors (WP4.2 anyone?). If you're lucky, it can also be printed on one of the first matrix printers. But, being the hero that you are, you have everything neatly in order. Until your computer stops working and you have to transfer everything to a new computer. A computer with yet another new version of a word processor. Despite all the promises that transferring will run smoothly, pieces of text are lost with every transversion. Just as characters and letters spontaneously disappear over time in old text processors. Storage and renewing are necessities. That's partly why I decided to publish all my short stories in print so that there would at least be a paper version if the e-book files will ever go missing or parts of the text spontaneously will "dissolve".

Let's just hope the paper doesn't perish too quickly...

In order to "quickly" publish as many of my Flash & Shorts as possible on paper several new titles will appear in the Vinyed series this year. Abstract: Pantanodontinae described by Myers (1955) with monotypic genus (Pantanodon) and species (podoxys) have recently been elevated to family level in Cyprinodontiformes following molecular evidence, and parallelly fossil European cyprinodonts, previously placed in †Paralebias Gaudant 2013, were recently reassigned to the extant East African genus Pantanodon Myers 1955, as the only genus in Pantanodontidae, with all extant and fossil species sharing the laterally placed pelvic girdle and the adaptation of the pelvic fins in males. In this study the status and biogeographical distribution of all species (and all known institutional records) within Pantanodontidae is reviewed. Pantanodon is shown to be a diversified group of related species, recent, extant or fossil. Based on new data, on reassessments of old data and on new diagnoses, a division of Pantanodontidae into four genera is proposed: Pantanodon (nominotypical Tanzanian genus), Malagodon nov.gen. (Malagasy genus), Aliteranodon nov.gen. (Kenyan genus), three genera including (recent) East African species, and †Paralebias which includes all fossil Pantanodontidae European species. Pantanodon podoxys Myers, 1955 is revalidated as a distinct species and a closely related species from Tanga (Tanzania) is described as P. propinquus n.sp. Within Aliteranodon nov.gen., a recently collected species from Koreni (Kenya) is herein described as A. ndoano n.sp. and designated as its type species. Several more species are assigned to this new genus: Haplochilichthys stuhlmanni Ahl, 1924 with which Pantanodon podoxys was previously synonymized is revalidated with a new combination and its type locality is proposed as Pangani, in north-eastern Tanzania, after a detailed review of Stuhlmann’s collecting trips between 1894 and 1901; a misidentified species from Ngomeni (Kenya) is formally described as A. rostratus n.sp. and two misidentified miniature species from Tanzania are formally described as A. bucinus n.sp., from Zanzibar Island, and A. filimbi n.sp., from Bagamoyo mainland. Oryzias madagascariensis Arnoult, 1963 is designated as type species of Malagodon nov.gen.; Haplochilichthys jeanneli Pellegrin, 1935 is reviewed and a lectotype is designated following suspicions it may be placed in Pantanodontidae. Based on five significant osteological differences between recent and fossil species reestablishment of the fossil genus †Paralebias is proposed with a subdivision into three species-groups. For the first time the unique larval stage of A. stuhlmanni and A. ndoano n.sp. is disclosed.

Eduard Meinemahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09982081687049387597noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3274040078263895011.post-55115740168966394492022-12-30T00:30:00.148+01:002022-12-30T11:47:02.147+01:00The Unf

The Unf. Sometimes deliberately, sometimes because life - or rather, death - put a stop to it. Nevertheless, or perhaps precisely because of that never-completed stage, these works of art have become world famous. For years I have been intrigued by Keith Haring's Ünfinished" (1989). I always felt that, although unfinished, it is exactly as Haring envisioned it. As if this work had to be that way. Recently I found critics saying the work is actually completed but purposefully left “unfinished” to make a statement about aids and his life. So, maybe my gut feeling was right.

Keith Haring (detail) "Ünfinished".
Copyright Haring Foundation.

One of the oldest known unfinished works is Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa. Da Vinci began working on the Mona Lisa in 1503 and continued refining it until fourteen years later, in 1517. He interrupted work on the painting, probably because of arm injuries, and died in 1519 without ever getting around to resuming his work on the smiling diva. The unfinished painting never went to its commissioner, and Da Vinci was never paid for his work, but it did become one of the most famous works of art.

More recent, and literally closer for me, is the work "Victory Boogie-Woogie" by Piet Mondriaan. (Indeed, with two a's; exactly the way his name is written in Dutch). This work was still on the easel when Mondriaan died. Mondriaan had moved to New York in 1940 at the beginning of WW2 where he was finally free from German attacks. In 1944, it seemed the end of the war was near. Good news, bringing a sigh of relief to the world; Piet Mondriaan's reaction was no different. The colors represent everyone's elation. Some of the worst atrocities in human history would finally be over. (Although in most occupied territories, including The Netherlands, freedom did not come until 1945). "Victory Boogie-Woogie" makes the eagerness and joy for the light at the end of the tunnel tangible; even nearly eighty years later. Its purchase - the cost in over 82 million guilders, roughly €50M - caused a political and public uproar in The Netherlands. An expensive piece of national heritage. Perhaps the most widely used and nevertheless unknown unfinished work, is held by millions of people every day. At least, a copy of it. Although you may not recognize the name, you have certainly seen this famous artwork by Gilbert Stuart. Stuart is considered one of America's finest portraitists. Portraying George Washington was Stuart's dream, but he struggled to work with him. Washington, according to Stuart, was a rather dull interlocutor. As Stuart put it, "An apathy seemed to seize [Washington] and a void spread over his countenance, most terrible to paint." Despite this difficulty, he completed the iconic "Lansdowne portrait", a life-size painting of Washington, in 1796, the president's last year in office. But there is also a second, unfinished, portrait; the "Athenaeum Portrait" (its title referring to the Boston Athenaeum that acquired the portrait after the artist's death). Stuart never finished the portrait of his own accord and asked the president to keep it, a request that Washington granted. Stuart spent much of his life copying the portrait and selling copies of his famous artwork to earn a living until his death in 1828. So, is this the reason this portrait is so well known? Nope. You probaby recognize it as, since 1869, Stuart's painting of George Washington has graced the front of the U.S. one-dollar bill, although the bill looked very different than it does today.

Besides Haring's "Unfinished" I have another favorite work. While the appreciation of unfinished artworks may seem odd, they did have a substantial impact on the art world. The technique, intentional or not, is called Non-Finito. (Italian for "unfinished"). Hellebores are (evergreen) perennial flowering plants. The most popular Hellebores for garden use are H. orientalis and its colourful hybrids, mostly known as "Lenten Rose". The root is highly poisonous due to the presence of hellebore, which tastes bitter. The root powder was used by the Greeks for insanity and epileptic seizures. Laxatives still contain potential ingredients from hellebore root. It is even believed that Alexander the Great (356 BC to 323 BC) may have died of a hellebore overdose.) With this and its poisonous effect it´s no wonder they were used by witches. Ah Hellebore, a witchwort!

And how about this? A Helleborus protects its flowers against frost in an ingenious way. When it freezes hard, she pumps out the moisture, which she temporarily stores in the leaves and roots. The flowers then hang limp for a while, but do not freeze. Will the weather get better? Then the Christmas rose pumps the moisture to the flowers again and she soon looks radiant again!

Truly amazing. Not only did I learn about the plant, I also got several ideas to write a new story. But there was one more thing I didn't know... Helleborus comes from the Greek "hellein" (to kill) and "bora" (food) and means "deadly food". Yes, a deadly plant. I think I mentioned I live in a city called Hellevoetsluis once or twice. Well I wondered. Is "Helle" in our cityname also referring to death...? Apparently not. In this case Helle refers to the former "Helle Sea", presently known as North Sea. In (Dutch) toponymy, "helle" means "slope; especially low, or low-lying (and thus often swampy)." A little disappointing till I found something new. All this research led to another fact I didn't know. Since the third century there has been a true Dutch goddess: Nehalennia the goddess of the North Sea. Oh, oh. I dream away easily and I can feel a new story coming...

So... No. No Christmas tree, but man I can't wait to put all my ideas into a story!

<img alt=""Dreaming off"; Lyric Landscape by Eduard Meinema" border="0" data-original-height="1080" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyXyERzVFElJMdHLykuPxnBdAqO6_99BjWyN4TkKnktzeJ8M7aBu1Bdl51Nk1UmenN6kplsBSlkNDYfHkDWqvsldvQczytSPlIMtc7RMPWLCfR_M7UWKYCP6_dIbokCmuCzVNjPdqdoPmd6NfeCFo4S9zBl-jFGtXgUs9oig2q6sNRHAzES77K8sq_/w320-h320/IG%20Dreaming%20off.png" title=""Dreaming off"; Lyric Landscape by Eduard Meinema" width="320" />

This week´s artwork "Dreaming off" can be ordered in my printshop.

You can read the story behind this title in my newsletter.
Eduard Meinemahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09982081687049387597noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3274040078263895011.post-62289765308670184522022-03-23T10:42:00.002+01:002022-03-23T10:44:31.622+01:00Riptide

A rising tide lifts all boats. These collections are published as "Vinyed, Flash and Short Collection". The first issue, "Quadrennial" is out now. New issues will be published every ten weeks. Each containing about 6-8 stories; a little more than 30,000 words which is similar to a novella. Mind you my novellas, like "Vanura" are only published as standalone books (ebook and paperback).

This weeks artwork refers to the beginning of bookbinding. The historical ancestor of modern books is mostly called a codex. A word based on the Latin "caudex", which means trunk or (wood)block. The font I used for the text in the artwork is also called Caudex.
I've only bound a book once. Unfortunately I wasn't the only one who was pleased with the result (a nice binding with a selfmade, marbled cover). Some student took my book, leaving me empty handed. Every now and then I feel the urge to give it another try. Especially when I see how some artists are able to create unique books. A little research led to inspiration; not to create my own book of art, but inspiration for a new short story, "Ghostwriter", which will be available at the end of this week.

Synopsis: There are many "wannabe" writers; but not all of them make it till "The End". Wacht! Hulp is onderweg!

You made me forget myself
I thought I was
Someone else, someone good

Vrij vertaald:

Je hebt me mezelf laten vergeten

A song by Bob Seger, written in 1980. I've played it so many times, I think I know the lyrics by heart. My daughter will be most pleased with the beautiful artwork of this song (and also the cover of the album with the same title) which includes some wonderful horses. In an interview with "Rolling Stone" Seger explained: "I always say it's human nature that people are gonna love you sometimes and they're gonna use you sometimes. Knowing the difference between when people are using you and when people truly care about you, that's what "Against the Wind" is all about. The people in that song have weathered the storm, and it's made them much better that they've been able to do it and maintain whatever relationship. To get through is a real victory."
Timothy White "The Fire This Time" - Rolling Stone, May 1, 1980.

We'll be married thirty years at the end of this year. Against the Wind" over gaat. Christmas time is Michael Bubblé on the radio. Christmas songs all day long is just too much for me, but I do have some favorites. Being Dutch, of course I start with Nick and Simon, the Dutch Simon and Garfunkel (they made an interesting documentary on these artists and a wonderful album inspired by their music "Oostenwind"). Nick & Simon made several songs especially for the Holidays. I'm not really a fan of their music, but their song "Best time of the year" always makes mee feel good. That's what I call Happy Holidays.
But... My all time favorite is Chris Rea "Driving home for Christmas". First time I heard about Chris Rea was during my time in military service. My friend and I swapped LP's every weekend to (illegally) put them on tape (cassettes; remember those?). In exchange for "Bloody tourists" of Ten CC, with the hit "Dreadlock holiday" (Ah! The video! Great!), I went back home with "Whatever happened to Benny Santini" from Rea (including the hit "Fool if you think it's over"). I followed him ever since. "Driving home for Christmas" is typically one of those songs with a repetitive rhythm also found in Josephine, Auberge and other great songs of Chris Rea.

My wife prefers Wham ("Last Christmas"); my youngest daughter Jeske wrote "A Christmas playlist", a bundle of short stories inspired by Christmas songs; we all like Mariah Careys "All I want for Christmas is you"(who doesn't?) and there are plenty more interesting songs, some which are considered as Christmas songs but were not especially made for the Holidays (like John Lennon's "Imagine"). So many new songs every year, you wonder how people come up with new things. Which reminds me...

...I was thinking about a new Christmas story and came up with a future Santa. A visit from St. Nicholas".

Mijn favoriet aller tijden is Chris Rea "Driving home for Christmas". Geweldig!), ging ik terug naar huis met "Whatever happened to Benny Santini" van Rea (inclusief the hit 'Fool if you think it's over').

Mijn vrouw geeft de voorkeur aan Wham ("Last Christmas"); mijn jongste dochter Jeske schreef "A Christmas playlist", een bundel korte verhalen geïnspireerd op kerstliedjes; we houden allemaal van Mariah Careys "All I want for Christmas is you" (wie niet?). Wat me eraan herinnert...

On the other hand we're already messing up our own planet. Making it questionable whether we really will be able to create a livable situation for humanoids outside Earth. A tiny little problem we also have to deal with, is the required period of time. The estimated time to accomplish (read: finish) the process of terraforming varies from at least five or eight hundred years up to a hundred thousand years. Yep, not going to witness that myself...

Given the history of our solar system, even a hundred thousand years isn't really "a big deal" in universal terms. For us, "short living" creatures, it's a multitude of generations before we will be able to change Mars (or any other, more or less, suitable planet in our solar system). So, no need to start packing yet. Or, is it?

Colonizing Mars will probably be possible much earlier. Not by terraforming but by adapting our colonies into subterranean cities. To protect humans against radiation, we will have to live underground.

I thought, a much more pleasant situation would be possible; as such I imagined a series of "floating" skyscrapers around Mars. Of course, my positivity, got ruined by my negativity. My inner yin and yang are exposing themselves in this week's short story "Collummar". Well, it was supposed to be a short story, but considering the length it in fact should be called a novella. But hey, what's in a word?

Synopsis: Two technicians have been called in to repair a malfunction in a residential tower near Mars.

Of course book printing was revolutionary for the development and distribution. But more recently, newer technologies like e-books changed the publishing world more quickly than ever before...

Imagine how surprised I was when I got these two beautiful `books` from my grandkids. I doubt it if books will still be printed when these lovely kids will be grownups. But I am sure stories themselves will survive. Because people always need stories and storytellers. From the first storytellers, telling their stories around bonfires to directors creating stories into movies. Stories must be told. One way or the other. There's no telling what kind of media will be used in the future. You´ve heard this question before. Mostly referring to internationally renowned events. Things that shocked the world. Things that made the world stop turning. Well. For a while, at least...

"Momentum" is a Flash Fiction story about one of those events which had a worldwide impact. In fact the story is merely about the 'what if?' question. What if... We all know these moments in time that would have been the difference if only someone, you know... Curious? You may download and read it for free here. (Or buy me a coffee, candy; oh heck, just throw in a couple of coins!)

One such a memorable event was the murder of John Fitzgerald Kennedy (May 29, 1917 – November 22, 1963), the 35th president of the United States of America. An event so big that any other momentum which happened that day, passed by almost unnoticed. Did you know two famous writers passed away on the same day?

Clive Staples Lewis (29 November 1898 – 22 November 1963), an English writer best known for his work "The chronicles of Narnia", was a close friend of J.R.R.Tolkien. Both served at Oxford University and both were active in a literary discussion group called The Inklings. Now, doesn't that sound like some alien people? No such thing however; The Inklings were literary enthusiasts who praised the value of narrative in fiction and encouraged the writing of fantasy. The archive of "Journal of Inklings Studies", originally published as the "C.S. Lewis Chronicle", is still available online.

The world also lost English novelist and philosopher Aldous Huxley, that day. Aldous Leonard Huxley (26 July 1894 – 22 November 1963) is well known for his book "Brave new world". I was born in '63. So I've learned about Huxley many years later and read the book when I was at High School. In "Brave New World" (1932) and his final novel "Island" (1962), Huxley presented his vision of dystopia and utopia. His legacy is kept alive by the international Aldous Huxley Society, and the Centre for Aldous Huxley Studies (CAHS) a research centre (surprisingly) approved and founded by the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (University of Münster, Germany).

The world lost some impressive people that day. But it didn't stop turning. As always, after the shock, life goes on. Somehow. Some things are beyond our understanding; we can't contain everything. This week's short (science fiction) story is based on this thought. Synopsis of "The edge of reason": Life aboard the "Inoreg" has led to a dichotomy throughout the spaceship's journey. Two groups of people fighting each other. Two groups of people with the same end goal. Live and let live. Aldous Leonard Huxley (26 juli 1894 - 22 november 1963) staat bekend om zijn boek "Brave new world". The "Dordrechts Museum", established in 1842 and one of the oldest art museums in The Netherlands, currently has a beautiful exposition on Albert Cuyp. Thirty masterpieces of this painter are combined with artworks of foreign painters like Thomas Gainsborough; John Constable; J.M.W. Turner and others, who were influenced by his style. Not able to visit the exposition in person?
